How to Spot a Fake COA: 8 Red Flags (and How to Verify a Real One)
By PRISM Analytical Laboratories · · 7 min read
Forged, edited and recycled Certificates of Analysis are among the biggest problems in the research peptide market. A professional-looking PDF costs nothing to fake. This guide shows you the warning signs and how to check any report in under a minute.
Why fake COAs are so common
- Recycled reports: one genuine COA reused across many batches
- Edited reports: a real report with the purity or mass changed
- Fabricated reports: a document made up from scratch, sometimes using a real lab's name
- Wrong-compound reports: a real COA for a cheaper peptide relabelled as a more expensive one

8 red flags of a fake COA
| # | Red flag | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No verification ID or QR code | Real labs let you confirm reports independently |
| 2 | Lot number does not match your vial | The report does not cover your batch |
| 3 | Exactly 100.00% purity | Real HPLC results almost never show perfect purity |
| 4 | Report dated years ago | Unlikely to reflect current stock |
| 5 | No observed molecular weight | Identity was never confirmed |
| 6 | No net content | Fill dose is unknown |
| 7 | Mixed fonts, blurry areas, misaligned numbers | Signs of editing |
| 8 | Lab cannot be found or contacted | The "lab" may not exist |
Real vs fake: side by side
| Feature | Genuine third-party COA | Suspicious COA |
|---|---|---|
| Report ID | Unique, verifiable online | Missing or not verifiable |
| Lot number | Matches the vial | Missing, generic or mismatched |
| Purity | Realistic, e.g. 98.7% | Round or perfect, e.g. 100% |
| Identity | Observed MW reported | Not reported |
| Chromatogram | Included with peaks and RT | Missing or low resolution |
| Lab contact | Real address and support | None |
How to verify a COA in 3 steps
- Find the report ID printed on the certificate, or scan its QR code.
- Go to the issuing lab's own website. Never trust a verification link supplied only by the seller.
- Compare every field: compound, lot, purity, net content and dates must match exactly.
For PRISM reports, enter the ID on our verification portal. A report that is revoked or not found should not be trusted.
The safest option: test it yourself
Testing the vial you actually received is the only way to be certain. Send a sample to our lab and get your own verifiable report. See peptide testing in Canada for pricing, or learn how to read your COA.
